The territory of Cavallino-Treporti, border on east by the Municipality of Jesolo, on south by the sea-coast of the Adriatic Sea, on west by the Municipality of Venice (Lido of Venice) and on north with the Lagoon of Venice where are the Islands of St. Erasmus, Mazzorbo, Burano and Torcello. Linked to the territory there are the old and small villages inside the river bank: Treporti, Saccagnana and Lio Piccolo. Inhabited outpost which is located on the bank of the boundary between the open lagoon and the fish farms. On the coast, near the bridge over the river Sile, is the train Biofenologica. It is one of the last examples of an ancient dune and is a protected area since 1957. The area is privately owned, employs about 8,000 square meters and is home to rare plant species and that have disappeared elsewhere.
History of the Area
The Cavallino coast has formed over the past two centuries by debris from the Piave, in fact, the towns that now face the internal river bank (Treporti and Lio Piccolo, whose name “lio” is’ to lido) were earlier along the coastline. Cavallino, known in the Middle Ages under the name of Equilium.
The climate of the coast of Cavallino-Treporti and Venice is typical of the Po Valley, mitigated in the winter because of the proximity of the sea.
The clean sea, beautiful coastline, Tourist Park, famous monuments, city centers, with the Venice Lagoon and the Islands, have contributed to making this, one of the most popular Italian lands in the world and a tourist destination for cosmopolitan steady growth.
Cavallino’s economy is made up of agriculture, with the cultivation of vegetables and orchards, small farms farmyard animals and fishing in the sea and lagoon with the exploitation of the fish farms.
The coastal Maritime of Cavallino Treporti, now houses seaside settlements equipped for Seaside Holidays, especially campsites that extend from Faro of Piave Vecchia to the lighthouse of Punta Sabbioni. In this extreme point of the peninsula, overlooking the mouth of the port of Venice Lido, you can admire the military fortification of Old Fort and the church of S. Nicholas, portrayed by Canaletto and Guardi. Punta Sabbioni is also the boarding area to reach Venice, which is reached after about 15-20 minutes by boat to Venice Lido or Piazza San Marco Venezia Old Town. Close to the boarding area there are ample, guarded or free, car park. In Cavallino, you can stay in Hotel, in apartment, camping or farm.
Wine and Food
The cuisine of the “Serenissima”, which combines local traditions with influences stemming from foreign contacts, is definitely influenced by the proximity of the sea and then on the catch together with the gardens of the islands, to the rice that comes from the mainland, game, and still the essential polenta .
Among the dishes are the traditional symbol of “sardines in sauce” or marinated sardines, the “rice and peas”, the “Venetian liver”, the “black risotto with cuttlefish”, the “Cicchetti” and still eel marinade. Other delicacies of local cuisine with seafood are: spaghetti with clams, the busera ( with shrimp ) , second mixed fried fish and squid as the Lagoon, shrimp and scallops .
White and red wine at will of Venetian production (…to remember the fabulous Prosecco DOC Treviso Hills ).
Venice is also famous for cookies called “baicoli” and sweet as the “bread of the fisherman”, the “fried Venetian cream”, “bussolai” of Burano ( butter biscuits and shortbread “s” shaped ), the “chatter”, the “fregolotta”, the “milk pudding” called “rosada” and cookies of yellow semolina called “zaleti”.
